FERNANDO GÓMEZ-MONT URRUETA

President Felipe Calderon appointed Fernando Francisco Gomez-Mont to his cabinet’s top post—Secretary of Government (Interior)—in 2008 to help assure public security in the country.

Gomez-Mont was a key leader in Mexico's peaceful democratic transition in 1988 as well as a defender of electoral triumphs obtained in districts and municipalities throughout the country by the opposition. At the same time, he was considered to be a firm, valid interlocutor respected by various political sectors. He participated actively in successive electoral reforms that reinforced the Mexican institutional system such as the establishment of the Voters Cards with photographs, and the drawing up of a new Voters Register, the creation of the Federal Electoral Institute and the Electoral Court of the Judicial Branch, among others.

He served as legislator and advisor in all the Electoral Reform Processes between 1988 and 1996. He also promoted constitutional reforms in penal matters, public security and the responsibility of civil servants. He drafted laws on foreign investment, industrial property, economic competence, mining, fishing and forests.

Fernando Francisco Gomez-Mont Urrueta obtained a degree in law from the Escuela Libre de Derecho. He has been a member of the National Executive Committee, the National Council and the Political Commission of the National Action Party. As Federal Deputy, in 1991, he was President of the Justice Commission of the Chamber of Deputies during the 55th Legislature.
