Take the Mystery Out of VoIP

By Kathi Stevenson-Jelley

Very simply put, VoIP is a technology that allows telephone calls to be made over computer networks like the Internet. VoIP converts analog voice signals into digital data packets and supports real-time, two-way transmission of conversations using Internet Protocol (IP). VoIP also is referred to as Internet telephony, IP telephony, or Voice over the Internet.

VoIP calls can be made on the Internet using a VoIP service provider. A hosted VoIP solution can provide a rich set of features traditionally available only in expensive, traditional phone systems.

Pronounced "voyp," VoIP is the process of passing digitized voice traffic over the Internet rather than by using traditional telecom POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) circuits. By using the Internet, VoIP offerings are typically at a fixed monthly fee for unlimited long distance services and generally offer a substantial cost savings over traditional local and long distance telephone calls.
