San Diego Data Processing Corporation wins award

for “Outstanding Vision and Planning”

A team of information technology specialists from the San Diego Data Processing Corporation (SDDPC) received the “Outstanding Vision and Planning” award from the Project Management Institute at the San Diego chapter’s recent annual conference.

The award was given for the design and development of state-of-the-art technology that implemented a wireless LAN (local area network) solution for ensuring the city of San Diego’s Fire Department rapid data acquisition for fire fighting and rescue operations.  The solution helps firefighters download maps and related information faster and more effectively, getting lifesaving fire and emergency crews to the scene quickly and leading to potentially saved lives.

“It’s always an honor to be part of the city of San Diego’s winning team,” stated SDDPC president and CEO Tom Fleming.  “This award reflects the hard efforts and dedication from working in concert with the city’s team to meet changing demands in communications systems driven by information technology.”  SDDPC works in close partnership with the city of San Diego on numerous projects, benefiting the city’s water and trash services, libraries, parks and public safety programs.

“The design of this program and its application allow fire and rescue crews to work without interruption due to the wireless-based connectivity achieved from the system – computers no longer need to be moved from “dock to desk,” thus saving time and precious moments that can be a matter of life or death,” said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Chief Tracy Jarman.  The project team was responsible for designing the network, procuring and installing all wireless network LAN equipment and access points at 55 Fire-Rescue Department locations around the city, training and testing.  The project demonstrated rapid deployment of state-of-the-art technology to meet customer needs.  It was developed through the strong partnering with the corporation’s most valued customer, the city of San Diego, resulting in a win-win solution at a competitive cost.  The project also establishes an increasing list of SDDPC’s service offerings including managed, high-availability wireless LAN services to city departments at low cost.

City of San Diego Chief Information Officer Matt McGarvey said, “This award reflects the outcome of continued efforts of working closely with dedicated staff at San Diego Data Processing Corporation who provide mission-critical services to the city and residents throughout San Diego.”
