You’re In Good Hands at the University Club

When construction on Symphony Towers was completed in 1989, marking the first change to Downtown San Diego’s skyline in many years, The University Club crowned the landmark building.

Having ascended to a new 34th floor location from the ground floor a block away, the nearly 100-year-old business club didn’t fall prey to the “view restaurant” curse. The club built its membership of civic leaders and successful business people largely through its fine cuisine and impeccable attention to detail, and was committed to being much more than just a panoramic view of the San Diego Bay and the downtown skyline.

Though committed to its trademark traditional elegance —and never keen to embrace food fads — The University Club continues to refresh its cuisine, amenities and member activities to remain relevant and welcoming in an ever-changing business environment. This spring, the club introduced a four-course wine-pairing dinner that summons the skills of chef and sommelier for a spectacular dining encounter.

Because of Chef Eric Mauritzen’s commitment to market-fresh ingredients, the wine dinner’s menu changes weekly. The experience, however, won’t soon be forgotten. Each course on a recent Wednesday night benefited from the expert pairing by sommelier Stan Streblow. A puff pastry with goat cheese, buerre blanc and balsamic vinegar was paired with by a light, crisp Cristalino (Spanish sparkling wine) that allowed the delicate flavors of the dish to come through intact.

Caribbean grilled prawns topped with a tropical fruit salsa made a delicious partnership with a soft but full-bodied Verdejo, while the robust Morro Bay Cabernet Sauvignon complimented the flavorful braised short ribs topped with shredded onions.

As each new course arrived and glass was poured, it became more evident that guests are in the hands of an expert they can trust.

The University Club’s wine dinners are held Wednesday through Saturday for members and their guests only. The University Club atop Symphony Towers is the only private business and social dining club in downtown San Diego. It provides breathtaking views with the perfect ambiance for elegant business and social gatherings. Membership benefits also include the use of nearly 250 other private business clubs, golf clubs, resorts and country clubs worldwide. Membership to The University Club is by invitation only. Therefore, one requirement for membership is to identify a member sponsor. If you don’t know a member but are interested in pursuing membership, an Ambassador Enrollment Council Member may act as your sponsor.
