What is a legal nurse consultant, you might ask.  We are registered nurses who are certified as legal consultants to demystify medical facts for lay people.  We are an indispensable part of any legal team who deals with health, illness or injury.  A major role of a Certified Legal Nurse Consultant (CLNC®) is to educate.  We educate attorneys, clients, jurors, plaintiffs, defendants, resource consultants, consumers and yes, even judges.  Medical records and jargon can be confusing to non-medical people.  It is our job to break down even the most voluminous medical records into an easy to understand format.  We do that by preparing reports, organizing timelines and graphs, assembling demonstrative evidence, as well as many other types of records.

Who can utilize these services?   Attorneys for the plaintiff or the defense, insurance companies, healthcare facilities, other legal nurse consultant’s with different areas of expertise and government agencies.

What types of services do we provide?  Here are just a few:  we screen or investigate cases for merit, we define the applicable standards of care, we define deviations from and adherences to the applicable standards of care, we assess the alleged damages and/or injuries, we identify factors that caused or contributed to the alleged damages and/or injuries, we organize, tab, and paginate medical records, we summarize, translate and interpret medical records, we identify and recommend potential defendants, we conduct literature search and integrate the literature (including standards and guidelines) into the case analysis, we research and analyze the validity and reliability of research studies relied on by all parties, we identify and review relevant medical records, hospital policies and procedures, other essential documents and tangible items, we attend independent medical examinations, and we locate and interface with expert witnesses.  These are less than half of the services that we will provide.

Why will you benefit from hiring a CLNC® when you already have a paralegal and/or a physician that you utilize?  A CLNC® has a medical background both in education and experience.  Their focus is on the medical facts, unlike the paralegal who has been trained in the legal realm.  Sometimes, what IS in the medical record isn’t as important as what ISN’T in it.  Only a legal nurse is going to pick up on that fact.  Consulting physicians cannot be as cost effective as a CLNC® and they are not versed in the standards of care for the bedside nurse.  Physicians do not review and critique medical records on a daily basis, unlike the beside nurse.  CLNC®’s are used to scrutinizing every little detail, no matter how minute.  It can make the difference between winning or losing a case.

As well as being a CLNC®, I have 14 years experience as a Registered Nurse in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), in addition I have multiple years experience with pediatrics, adolescents, pediatric home health, mother/well baby, pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and the emergency department.  I also have multiple years experience as a clinical supervisor and am adept at reviewing medical records.  Your clients deserve the best representation that they can get.  Don’t lose a case because a vital piece of medical information was overlooked.  Let us prepare your most valuable witness….THE MEDICAL RECORD!!!   Be sure and ask me about my risk free guarantee.  For more information please visit our website at www.ourlegalnurse.com, e-mail at  marsha@ourlegalnurse.com or call us at 858.254.5211.
