Diversionary Theatre presents comedy “Bunbury”

Diversionary Theatre will present Tom Jacobson’s new play Bunbury, a serious play for trivial people, from May 18-June 17. An Oscar Wilde offstage character from “The Importance of Being Earnest” comes to life and inadvertently changes the ending of several classic plays, including “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” and even “Waiting for Godot.”

Diversionary’s production will be directed by Esther Emery. The cast features David McBean playing the title character, Diane Addis, Chris Buess, Melissa Fernandes, Aaron Marcotte, John Rosen, Wendy Wadell and Tom Zohar.

Diversionary recently announced their 2007-2008 season, which will start in July with “The Break Up Notebook: The Lesbian Musical” (July 12-August 12). Presented by Diversionary and Rose Marcario, the show is an official event of San Diego LGBT Pride. Break Up Notebook is the award-winning, hilarious, touching and sexy musical comedy for anyone and everyone who has ever had a broken heart and lived to tell about it.

The rest of the new season includes “The Busy World is Hushed” by Keith Bunin (October 4-28); Harvey Fierstein’s “Torch Song Trilogy” (November 15-December 16); the world premiere of a new family musical, “The Daddy Machine” (January 18-27); “Bluebonnet Court” by Zsa Zsa Gershick, a co-production with Moxie Theatre (March 20-April 13); and “Corpus Christi” by Terrence McNally (April 24-May 25). Special theatre events during the year include a workshop of “Manhunt-The Musical;” “Mormon American Princess” by Steve Fales; and new play readings through the “Queer Theatre – Taking Center Stage” play development program.

Diversionary Theatre was started in 1986. The mission of the theatre is to produce plays with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender themes that portray characters in their complexity and diversity both historically and contemporarily. The City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture provides major support for Diversionary.

Single tickets are now on sale for Bunbury. Performance times are: Thursday at 7:30pm, Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm, Sunday at 2:00 and 7:00pm, and a Monday, June 4 performance at 7:30pm. Tickets are $23-$29.
