Chamber Board of Directors Endorses Jan Goldsmith for San Diego City Attorney
The San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors announced its endorsement of Judge Jan Goldsmith for San Diego City Attorney on Thursday, August 28, 2008.
The Chamber Board does not regularly endorse candidates for City Attorney. In fact, this marks the first time the Chamber has endorsed in the City Attorney race.
The Chamber chose to endorse in this race because our local economy and jobs are threatened by financial instability within our region’s largest city. The outcome of the election for City Attorney is vital for fiscal reform and stability at City Hall. A financially stable city government, capable of maintaining infrastructure and delivering basic services, is important to create jobs and economic growth in the San Diego region.
“San Diego’s City Attorney has the responsibility to provide the Mayor and City Council with the best possible legal advice. An effective City Attorney can help the city return to financial stability and get the city moving in the right direction,” said Chamber President and CEO Ruben Barrales.
The Chamber’s decision to endorse Jan Goldsmith followed a specific andlengthy interview process. Both candidates (incumbent City Attorney Mike Aguirre and Superior Court Judge Jan Goldsmith) presented to the Chamber Board at the July 24, 2008, meeting, and answered questions on the priorities and role of the City Attorney in sustaining economic vitality, maintaining infrastructure and delivering basic city services for the residents of San Diego. A committee comprised of Chamber Board members as well as Public Policy committee members then interviewed both candidates and presented their recommendation tothe Chamber's Public Policy committee and to the Board of Directors. “Jan Goldsmith is an excellent candidate for City Attorney. His experience and approach to the job, ability to emphasize the law over political considerations and his plans to increase coordination in law enforcement make him anoutstanding choice for San Diego City Attorney,” said Chamber Board Chairman Phil Blair.
