Lunch of the Month: Wings Pizza ‘N’ Things

Downtown San Diego’s new Wings Pizza ‘N’ Things isn’t your average sports bar.  Sure, the location (which recently opened in August, 2008) has 35 flat-screen TVs adorning the walls, a perfect view of Petco Park, and an enticing array of wings and other appetizers, but the fresh menu and fun atmosphere go far beyond just that.

Wings Pizza ‘N’ Things’ menu offers a variety of starters, pizzas, burgers and salads to satisfy any craving.  On my most recent visit to the restaurant, my dining companions and I sampled two of the starters: crispy fried mushrooms with a side of homemade ranch, and potato wedges topped with cheese, bacon, sour cream and fresh pico de gallo.  Both appetizers were surprisingly non-greasy, and our server commented that the kitchen uses vegetable oil to keep things on the lighter side. 

For our lunch, we sampled the calzones, with fresh crust (they make their own crust on location!) and marinara sauce with a choice of two toppings.  Calzones and pizza, with sizes ranging from personal to a large 16” pie, are baked in the restaurant’s state of the art three-minute pizza oven, a great option for those in a hurry!  We also tried out the fish and chips, featuring Fat Tire ale-battered tilapia served with a pile of crispy French fries.  Both entrees were very reasonably priced and large enough to split. 

Wings Pizza ‘N’ Things’ menu offers a variety of other options as well.  Those looking for something lighter can try the Caribbean salad, a mix of chicken, pico de gallo, juicy pineapple, mandarin oranges and honey-lime dressing; or burger lovers will enjoy one of the 6 different burgers on the menu – including the tempting Sunset BBQ burger.   And one can’t forget the signature wings, which come in a variety of different flavors including Original or Spicy Buffalo, Chipotle Pepper, Garlic Parmesan, Sunset BBQ Cajun and more.

A great place to take the team for an outing or on game day, the restaurant has function rooms as well as a full bar with 20 beers on tap.  Wings Pizza ‘N’ Things has lunch specials Monday-Friday, 11-2, as well as happy hour specials throughout the week.  Quick, friendly service and a fun, casual atmosphere make this restaurant a great place to try for a downtown lunch or an after-work hangout alike.  This restaurant gets the Chamber stamp of approval!
