Board Report
The Chamber’s Board of Directors met on Thursday, September 25, 2008, and elected Benjamin A. Haddad, Partner, California Strategies, as 2009 Chairman of the Board. Thomas V. Wornham, Executive Vice President and Regional Manager of Wells Fargo Bank was elected 2009 Vice Chairman of the Board. Both will take office at the December meeting.
Chancellor Marye Anne Fox, University of California San Diego, discussed key elements of the sustainability plan at UC San Diego. She identified challenges such as campus growth, unfunded mandates, new restrictions and a constrained state operating budget. She suggested that the best way for the business community to help UC San Diego would be to encourage legislators to provide more support for our state universities.
Sharon Lawrence, Executive Director of Voices for Children, talked to the Board about Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs), trained volunteers supervised by Voices for Children to guide a foster child's case through the complex foster care system.
Mark Neville, Associate Executive Director of the San Diego Bowl Game Association, spoke about the Association’s mission is to generate tourism, create exposure, provide an economic benefit and create civic pride. In 2007, the Holiday Bowl and Poinsettia Bowl games generated $41.5 million in economic impact for San Diego. The Board voted to support Proposition 11, the California Voters First Redistricting Initiative and the City Development Services Department Business Process Re-Engineering effort.
