President's Update

By Ruben Barrales, President & Chief Executive Officer

If you haven’t done so yet, please vote today.  Today is Election Day, and we have some important decisions to make. Visit the Chamber’s web site (www.sdchamber.org) to see the Chamber’s Election Recommendations.

The Chamber has endorsed Judge Jan Goldsmith for San Diego City Attorney. With a new City Attorney, the City of San Diego may have an opportunity to focus on solving our budget shortfalls, reversing the underfunding of the city’s pension fund, and developing an atmosphere in City Hall that focuses on solutions and not on politics and personalities.

On the state level, the Chamber has partnered with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and others to pass Proposition 11. We need to eliminate the conflict of interest that is built into a system where legislators draw their own districts.  The current system of redistricting has left us with a legislature in gridlock and an unprecedented state deficit.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 5, the Chamber will host a post-election Good Government Session to help our members make sense of the election results at the local, state and national levels.  We’ll examine the implications for San Diego’s business community with a panel including: John Neinstedt, Sr., President of Competitive Edge Research & Communications, Duane Dichiara, Partner at Coronado Communications, Evan McLaughlin, Political Director of the San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, and Douglas Farry, Managing Director at McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP.

The event is by invitation only; please let me know if you are interested in attending by responding to me at president@sdchamber.org.
