Membership Update

By Doug Holman, Vice President of Membership

I have wondered for the longest time why people stop performing the actions that make them successful. In my seven years at the Chamber, I have witnessed many businesses join, get engaged and experience success. One phenomenon that has eluded my understanding is why successful members stop participating.  Typically we are assured that it is a good thing and that the Chamber should be proud. These members’ businesses have improved so greatly that they need to redirect their focus and energies on servicing this boon of opportunity. Success stories are great; however, every single time I wonder if leaving the nest is a good strategy.

This past week I finally heard a confession. It was provided for the benefit of several current members and was shared with a certain amount of embarrassment. The identity of the member is not important, though I am confident that I could get permission if it were really necessary in order to iterate the true meaning. Following is my best attempt to repeat the compelling testimonial for staying actively engaged in membership:

“Seventeen years ago our family owned business joined the Chamber of Commerce. We did so because we needed to meet people, generate credibility for our company and grow our business. For six years we attended numerous events, volunteered and got extremely engaged. Our business grew on the strength of our participation. In fact, we got so busy that we redirected our energies toward our customers and needs within our organization.

Eleven years later I am back at the Chamber and realize how much opportunity there is to meet new people.  It seems that we had been missing out on this opportunity during the time we were away. My husband and I mused about why we ever left the Chamber, and couldn’t help but wonder how much stronger our business would be without the huge gap in participation.  My point is that the Chamber works when you roll up your sleeves and get involved. Learn from what I am saying and never stop showing up.”

After hearing this testimonial I thanked the member for both her honesty and for answering my previously unresolved question. There are many ways to get engaged - join a referral group, attend committee meetings, become an ambassador, participate in free training or regularly attend monthly events.

Be seen, be heard and belong!

As always, I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event.
