Harbor Police Awarded Grant for Lifesaving Equipment Grant funded through the San Diego County Law Enforcement Foundation
The San Diego County Law Enforcement Foundation, a nonprofit corporation that provides financial support to county-wide law enforcement agencies, has awarded the Harbor Police a grant for lifesaving equipment.
The Harbor Police will use the nearly $2,600 grant to purchase lifesaving equipment for the department. Equipment will include a small, portable emergency tool that will allow officers to rescue someone who may be trapped in a car. The tool contains a device that can break any kind of glass and a blade to cut through seatbelts. In addition, special breathing tubes used to maintain an open airway during mouth-to-mouth resuscitation will be purchased.
This is the fourth year that the Harbor Police has received a grant from the San Diego County Law Enforcement Foundation. Past grants have been used to purchase Automatic External Defibrillators, which are used to administer an electric shock to someone going into cardiac arrest, emergency breathing equipment for police divers and single-man life boats that can fit behind a diver’s back before being inflated.
The San Diego Harbor Police is the law enforcement arm of the Port of San Diego. The department is made up of 146 sworn officers and 27 civilian personnel who provide law enforcement, marine fire-fighting services, airport services, public safety and Homeland Security throughout the tidelands and San Diego Bay. Harbor Police Officers patrol San Diego International Airport under contract with the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. The department works closely with federal, state and local law enforcement agencies and terrorism task forces to develop solutions to a variety of Port security issues. |
