Stay Safe in 2008:  Use 5-1-1 for Roadside Assistance

If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to spend less time on the freeway, take a moment right now to program 5-1-1 into your cell phone. Since its launch in February 2007, the San Diego Service Authority for Freeway Emergencies (SAFE) Mobile Call Box Program has been on-hand to provide non-emergency roadside assistance to motorists driving on San Diego County highways or freeways.

The next time you are in need of a tow truck, tire change, gasoline, transfer to AAA or other motorist aid service, call 5-1-1 and connect directly to roadside assistance. The SAFE Mobile Call Box Program can turn a potentially prolonged and traumatic experience into only a minor inconvenience.

“No one likes having to deal with car trouble,” said Eddie Castoria, executive director of the San Diego SAFE Mobile Call Box Program.  “With the Mobile Call Box Program, we’ve taken an important free public service and made it safer and easier - it’s like having your own personal call box in your purse or pocket.”

While call boxes are still operational and available on San Diego freeways and state routes if a cell phone is not available, motorists have appreciated this convenient alternative. Sandra, a San Diego county resident, was traveling with her husband and three children to Yuma for a weekend trip when her car got a flat tire.  Sandra called 5-1-1 and commented that the service “made the situation much less of a hassle than it could have been.”  She also appreciated that the family was able to stay together inside the vehicle while they waited for help to arrive.

The SAFE Mobile Call Box program works in conjunction with the San Diego Association of Governments' (SANDAG) 5-1-1 Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS), which provides San Diego residents and visitors with information about traffic and public transit throughout San Diego County.  So,
program 5-1-1 into your cell phone and stay safe in 2008!
