Public Policy Update

By Scott Alevy, Vice President of Public Policy & Communications

The City of San Diego is updating its General Plan for the first time in more than 20 years. Since the adoption of the General Plan in 1979, the city's population has grown by 33 percent and is predicted to increase by another 35 percent to 1.65 million residents by the year 2030. Considering current growth trends, the new General Plan will need to accommodate future housing, employment, and infrastructure needs while maintaining the quality of life expected by San Diegans.

The Plan addresses the following Elements: Land Use and Community Planning; Mobility; Urban Design; Economic Prosperity; Public Facilities, Services and Safety; Recreation; Conservation; Noise; Historic Preservation

A Chamber stakeholders working group reviewed the Draft General Plan Update in detail for the past 10 months.  The Working Group, chaired by Chamber board member Lee Burdick, and co-chaired by Craig Anderson, Solar Turbines, includes BIOCOM, BIA, BID Council, NAIOP, IEA, San Diego Housing Commission, San Diego Housing Federation, Gen-Probe, QUALCOMM, Kyocera, and Home Depot.

The committee formulated recommendations and comments, providing a business perspective on the GPU. Chamber committees and the Board of Directors reviewed the recommendations and provided additional input.  Final recommendations will be submitted to the City.  For details on the Chamber’s recommendations, please contact avillagrana@sdchamber.org
