Mexico Business Center Update By James Clark, Mexico Business Center Director General The Mexico Business Center (MBC) will host the “Second Annual United States-Mexico Border Efficiency Conference” at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice at the University of San Diego on Friday, June 26. The purpose of the conference is to bring together federal government officials from both Washington and Mexico City to discuss ways to help alleviate both northbound and southbound delays at California-Baja California border crossings. The Conference is an extension of the MBC’s Project Smart Border 2010 initiative that has made specific proposals for each of six existing border crossings between the two Californias. The organization also strongly supports the planned second Otay Mesa border crossing as well as a ticketed passenger crossing at Tijuana International Airport. University of San Diego’s Trans-Border Institute is a co-sponsor of the conference, which is themed “Towards a Secure and Efficient Border between the Californias.” Co-chairmen are Oscar Escobedo, Baja California Secretary of Tourism and Steve Williams, Chairman of the Mexico Business Center. Three panels include: “Setting the Stage: The Stakeholders' Most Urgent Requirements,” moderated by Chamber President & CEO Ruben Barrales; “Finding the Solutions: Smart Border 2010 Northbound & Southbound Recommendations,” moderated by Rudy M. Camacho, Chairman of the SDRCC International Committee; and “How the Government Can Assist: Border Infrastructure and Funding,” moderated by John McNeece, Immediate Past Chairman of the Mexico Business Center. A luncheon will immediately follow the conference. Invited speakers include Senator Luis Alberto Villarreal, Chairman of the Committee on Border Issues, Senate of Mexico, and United States Representative Bob Filner, who represents the entire California border in the U.S. Congress. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and Tijuana Mayor Jorge Ramos have also been invited to make remarks. The conference is open to all who are interested in knowing more about how the San Diego/Baja California economy can benefit from border crossing that are as efficient as they are secure.
