Executive Profile:
Richard Gulley, Senior Vice President, Alliant Insurance Services, Inc.

Q: What is your role at Alliant, and what was your background before joining this company?
A: I serve as Senior Vice President, having joined Alliant Insurance Services (previously Robert H. Driver Company) in 1977.  My primary responsibility is client development.

Q: What sets your company apart from others?
A: As the nation’s premier specialty insurance brokerage company, Alliant Insurance Services provides cost-saving insurance programs to corporate clients in specific industries, those who belong to specialized trade groups and business associations, and public entities. This specialized focus gives us an unmatched depth of knowledge about the insurance needs of these types of businesses and organizations.  Our specialization also creates significant advantages for our clients, both in coverage and pricing, and we offer advantaged insurance and employee benefits programs for clients in public entity, energy and marine, healthcare, tribal nations, law firms, real estate/hospitality and construction.

Q: What challenges do you see facing companies like yours in today's economies, and how do you plan to overcome them?
A: Our biggest challenge is meeting our clients’ insurance needs despite reduced budgets.  This requires us to work even more closely with clients to ensure they are receiving the best coverage at the lowest possible cost.  It also requires developing innovative strategies and programs that meet the specialized insurance requirements of each client.

Q: Are you involved in the community, and if so how?
A: I am a Trustee at the San Diego Zoo, a Board member of both the Anza Borrego Foundation and Friends of Vista Hill, and a member of the Director's Cabinet at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Q: What are your greatest accomplishments?
A: I consider my greatest achievement to be my ongoing client development contribution to the growth and evolution of Alliant.  Through effective market positioning, specialization and strategic acquisitions, the company has grown from a regional insurance broker to become the 11th largest insurance brokerage company in the nation with 38 offices in 20 states and $3.2 billion in premiums.  It also has been extremely satisfying to watch and aid the development and success of the individuals who we have brought into the company.
