President's Update
On behalf of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, I enthusiastically support the recently announced arena partnership between San Diego State and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians. San Diego State University is one of the finest institutions of higher education in California and a major contributor to our region’s economy. Viejas is one of the most successful Native American tribes in all of California - what a great partnership. In these challenging economic times, this is a terrific financial deal for the university. The tribe’s investment (approximately $6 million over 10 years) will ensure the arena will remain a first-rate facility for sports and family entertainment, and will provide vital financial support for SDSU’s important educational mission and programs. But more than that, it provides an opportunity to educate the San Diego community about the tribe’s history, culture and contributions to our region. Viejas is much more than a casino -- it is a people. The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians has inhabited this region for thousands of years. In addition, Viejas is a major supporter to thousands of civic and charitable groups throughout San Diego County, including SDSU and other educational organizations. We should appreciate the history, contributions and relationships we have with Viejas and other Native American tribes in San Diego. As always, please feel welcome to e-mail me with questions or suggestions at president@sdchamber.org.
