Chamber Chairman Calls for Assistance on City Budget

“Civics 101” in the classroom is very different from “making sausage” in real life.  The current City budget issue illustrates all too well that the real thing doesn’t resemble much of what we are taught.

One of the Chamber’s four policy priorities for 2009 is the City of San Diego’s budget.  Earlier this year, I appointed a City Budget Task Force, led by our Public Policy Chair Vince Mudd. Vince’s team, along with President Ruben Barrales, have presented the Chamber’s priorities to the City Council’s Budget Committee, chaired by Tony Young.

President Calderón presses the switch to activate Kyocera’s new automated warehouse. Kyocera recently inaugurated its second manufacturing plant in Tijuana to produce solar photovoltaic modules, a line of renewable energy products that convert sunlight into useable electricity with no noise, no moving parts and no pollution.

In 2008, California enacted the Green Chemistry Initiative through legislation (AB 1879/ Feuer and SB 509/Simitian).  With the help of a Science Panel, these bills will authorize the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to adopt regulations by Jan. 1, 2011 to identify and prioritize chemicals of concern in consumer products, develop alternatives to existing hazardous chemicals and regulate, and ban, certain products that contain those chemicals.
