With the enticing aroma of baking bread wafting down the block, Bread on Market offers the best of a deli and a bakery – delicious homemade sandwiches on freshly baked breads. Open near Petco Park in San Diego’s East Village for nearly 6 years, the shop recently came under new management with Owner Valerie Grover.
“I know a lot of my customers by name,” said Valerie. “We’re a family-run, neighborhood sandwich shop. My husband is the pastry chef, and my daughters help with production.”
A true local favorite, Bread on Market cater breads to several local businesses, such as Wolffy's Place, and has won over a fan following among customers for their giant sandwiches and freshly baked sweets. The shop is open until 4 p.m. daily (5 p.m. on weekend and 7 p.m. on Padres game nights) but bakers work through the night on the award-winning artisan breads, like the soft focaccia bread or the “Frenchernickel Swirl,” a twisted-together loaf of pumpernickel and French bread.
In addition to Bread on Market’s regular menu of deli sandwiches, they also offer salads, soups, and the occasional daily special – like macaroni and cheese with jalapeño and bacon (the special offered the day of our visit). The restaurant recently added a new line of grilled Panini-style sandwiches.
On our last visit, my dining companions and myself tried one of the restaurant’s most popular sandwiches, the turkey club, piled high with a generous portion of turkey, applewood smoked bacon (baked, not fried), avocado, lettuce and tomato, and a sweet, homemade honey mustard on sourdough bread. Off the new grilled sandwich menu, we highly recommend the grilled Italian, a panini with salami, ham, pepperoncinis, olives, provolone and a bold, spicy Dijon mustard. For more hearty tastes, we suggest the “beefeater” sandwich with roast beef, melty provolone, tomato, BBQ sauce and red onion on the restaurant’s delicious francese hard roll – a thick, crusty roll that holds up to the sauciest sandwich.
We also liked Bread on Market’s Mediterranean salad, with crumbly feta, olives, tomato and a tangy homemade dressing; and the hearty, comforting tomato basil and home-style chicken noodle soups (soups change daily). Sandwiches are served with thick portions of meat and sides of fresh fruit – a great lunchtime value. And, for those with a sweet tooth, there’s no better place than a bakery to find the city’s best homemade brownie.
Friendly service, fresh breads and some of the best sandwiches around make Bread on Market a winner in our book! Bread on Market is located at 730 Market Street in downtown San Diego. For full menus and more information on catering, wholesale and hours, visit www.breadonmarket.com.
