San Diego Crew Classic

On March 27th and 28th, 2010, collegiate, junior, masters and even Olympic-level athletes will return to Crown Point Shores for the 37th San Diego Crew Classic.   More than 100 teams from 67 cities in 24 states in the U.S. and Canada will test their skills on the protected waters and green lawns of Mission Bay Park.  With the city skyline as a backdrop across seven lanes, crews race for early season honors and coveted trophies, cheered by spectators enjoying amenities such as the jumbotron for viewing the races start to finish, tents for alumni groups and clubs, a trade show and great food.

Known as America’s premier spring regatta, the Crew Classic began in 1973 and is now the largest regatta in the world exclusively for eight-oared rowing shells.  In 1975 the Copley Cup was established and quickly became coveted as the grand prize in the nation for men’s collegiate crews.  Winners of The Copley Cup trophy include Harvard, Washington, Penn, Cal, UCLA and Stanford.  The Jessop-Whittier Cup is the highest prize for women, and winners include Washington, Cal, Michigan, USC, and many other exceptional universities.

Thousands of spectators watch the 2000-meter races on the popular Junbotron, but now thousands more watch the races via a live streaming webcast on the national broadcast on ESPNU.

Athletes, families and alumni are encouraged to come early and stay late.  Get the regatta off to a good start with our Thursday (March 26th) tour packages to Sea World or the Olympic Training Center (National Team and Olympic medalists will greet you). See “For Spectators” on the San Diego Crew Classic website.

Gates open at 6:00 a.m., and the first race is at 7:30 a.m. both days.  Concessions are available on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Admission is $7.00 per day, 13 and under free. Parking at Crown Point Shores is $10 per car.  See the “Directions section” on the San Diego Crew Classic website at www.crewclassic.org.  There will be free parking and shuttle at Ski Beach.  For more information, contact Ann L. Hill, Chief Advancement Officer at (619) 225-0305 or annhill@crewclassic.org.
